My NASCAR JournalThis is where I rant and rave about everything NASCAR
June 10 Goodbye for SummerWell everybody, I am off on a great adventure this summer. I am leaving tomorrow for Dublin, Ireland, where I will be volunteering for 2 months. I return August 16. Meantime, this blog will sit, lonely and un-updated, as I miss NASCAR's summer stretch. By the time I get back, it'll almost be time for the Chase. I'm going to have fun, but I will miss watching my races. My family will try hard to keep me up to date! Hope everyone else has a great summer. Goodbye for now! June 09 PoconoIf only they would knock 100 miles off this race! It would take away 40 laps and make it a little more bearable to watch. On lap 17, Kasey Kahne got the lead back from Jimmie Johnson, who had taken it on the opening lap. Around lap 40, Kurt Busch got loose and spun, taking a bumpy ride through the grass. He broke all the struts on his splitter, but they were able to recover and finish in the top 10. On lap 47, Kyle Busch tried to force his car into a spot that just wasn't there and smacked the wall. He drove right up in front of Jamie McMurray who tried to give him room, but there wasn't any. It was just stupid. At least Kyle took the blame for it. After another caution 10 laps later, Kasey Kahne was penalized for loose lug nuts and had to come back in and then restart way in the back. On lap 81, Clint Bowyer got loose coming off turn 3 and as he was spinning out, he got hit hard by Juan Montoya on the frontstretch. Juan's car was on fire at the end of pit road and that clean-up delayed the opening of the pits a bit. After this, there were some more cautions, some green flag pit stops, and a lot of strategy. Because Kahne was penalized early, he was able to work his way through the field the rest of the race. Kyle Busch spun and brought out the caution while riding around, setting up a restart with 20 to go. Brian Vickers was leading, but Kahne took it from him with about 15 laps to go. He won from the pole, but did it the hard way. NashvilleJoey Logano started on pole for the Busch race and led about the first 60 laps. However, after a caution and pit stops, Logano was further back in the top 10. Everyone got bunched up on the restart and he was turned around and wrecked. With 12 to go, there was a caution for a spin. David Reutimann was leading, Clint Bowyer was 2nd, and Brad Keselowski 3rd. Keselowski had the freshest tires and the most fuel. On the restart with 8 to go, Bowyer moved Reutimann out of the way. David Stremme did the same thing to him for the 3rd position. With 6 to go, Keselowski took the lead from Bowyer and he didn't look back. On the last lap, Stremme moved Bowyer out of the way and got 2nd; Bowyer ended up 4th. So Brad got his first win, only the second "regular" to win all season. Scott Wimmer won earlier in the year. June 07 CTS TexasRon Hornaday and Jack Sprague were the two main guys in this one. They swapped the lead several times throughout the race. Good work in the pits was able to keep Hornaday out front. He was able to hold off Kyle Busch in a GWC finish. Last week's winner Scott Speed had a couple incidents. First, he got into the side of Rick Crawford and spun out across the grass and through pit road. Everyone went running, but he managed to narrowly keep it off of the wall. Crawford wasn't so lucky. The contact cut his tire and sent him into the wall. Second, Speed made an overly aggressive move with 3 laps to go and made it 3 wide, but he couldn't hold it down there and ended up crashed, which is what lead to the GWC. In the category of slightly embarassing moments, one of Hornaday's crewmen injured his ankle after jumping up and down, celebrating the pit stop that put them in the lead. It looked as though it could be worse than just a sprain. Another moment in the history of celebrations gone wrong. Kasey Kahne won the Pocono pole. June 02 Rain Then RaceSaturday's Busch race was delayed for quite some time by rain - downpours, to be exact. I couldn't believe they were actually able to dry the track and get the whole race in before daylight faded. Of course, it helps to have concrete. The start was waved off for a few laps because while a jet dryer was rolling down pit road trying to make sure the pits were also dry, it blew away an entire section of asphalt! On the slow motion replay, the asphalt just peeled away like paper. It was one of the strangest things I've seen at a racetrack, right up there with Jeff Gordon's Martinsville pothole run-in. There wasn't really anything they could do except clean up the pieces, but it was fixed (patched) before Sunday's race. Very odd.
On to the race. On lap 20, Greg Biffle just absolutely wrecked rookie Landon Cassill. He was right on his butt the whole backstretch and took him out going into the corner (turn 3). The guys in the booth tried to excuse it, but it was obvious from Biffle's on-board that Cassill wasn't loose; he'd helped him around. That annoyed me because it was just plain rude and Biffle's a veteran; he should show more respect. Just past halfway there was a caution for Brad Coleman. During pit stops, Brad Keselowski got into Kyle Busch when exiting. Keselowski's fender was bent in and Busch had heavy damage to the left side. He had been challenging up front. It didn't slow him down too much. He was still in the top 10 when with 32 to go, Jason Leffler got very loose and wiped Busch out along with himself. They had been running 8th and 9th at the time. The big problem was they were teammates in this race, both driving for Braun Racing. Kyle took the liberty of pointing that out during his interview when he said "I just have a teammate who can't stand to be number two." WHAT?! Good grief, Kyle Busch. Don't drive for Braun then! Leffler's not a double-dipper like you. Don't give him that kind of crap. Leffler, by the way, took all the blame for the incident. I hope Kyle watches that back and sees what really happened and hopefully, (but unlikely) apologizes for saying that. Denny Hamlin was the winner after leading much of the laps. JGR prospect/phenom/next big thing, etc., Joey Logano, finished 6th in his debut race.
